ImplementationComplexityMatch [principle] v1.0.0
Implementation complexity must match the aesthetic vision: maximalist designs require elaborate layered code; minimalist designs require restraint and precision — both are hard in different ways.
Examples
- Maximalist (Framer, editorial): mesh gradients, layered blur, stagger animations, variable font axes — each layer is intentional complexity
- Minimalist (Swiss, Vercel): razor-thin borders, pure white, tight type — complexity is in precision spacing, optical alignment, and restraint of decoration
- Wrong: implementing a brutalist design with Material UI rounded cards (convention betrays vision)
- Wrong: implementing a warm editorial design with no hover states or micro-interactions (underbuilt)
Rationale
The mistake is applying minimalist shortcuts (plain divs, no animation) to maximalist designs, or adding decorative noise (gradients, shadows, micro-animations) to a design whose power comes from severe reduction. Elegance means executing the chosen vision faithfully, not defaulting to the same technical complexity regardless of aesthetic direction.
